Navigation markers at Denham have been upgraded to make it safer for vessels navigating the area at night.

Department for Planning and Infrastructure Gascoyne Regional Manager Aidan Tansey said the installation of synchronised lighting on existing lateral marks showing the channel to the Denham Jetty would significantly improve night navigation.

"The upgrade will ensure skippers can safely navigate these waters at all times of the day or night," Mr Tansey said.

The upgrade followed a request from the Shark Bay Volunteer Sea Search and Rescue Group.

The LED synchronised rhythmic lighting that has been installed is solar powered and has enhanced visibility, even in areas where there is background lighting.

Mr Tansey said the upgrade had cost in the order of $11,500 and had been implemented as part of the Department's 2008/09 Navigation Aid Capital Works Plan.

He said the Department was responsible for developing and maintaining an extensive network of navigation aids within WA waters to provide safe passage for recreational and commercial vessels.

"The Department currently manages more than 1,000 navigation aides in WA and works closely with stakeholders to identify projects and works to improve navigation and keep boat owners and their passengers safe."
