Fares (country and metro)

Information for drivers regarding taxi fare schedules, tip charges and pre-agreed or contract fares. Pricing for country and metro taxi fares is also available here.

  Meters and schedules

The Department of Transport approves the fare schedules of each taxi company.

The fare schedule must be clearly displayed in the vehicle in full view of passengers.

Fares charged to passengers must be consistent with the relevant Western Australian fare schedule and not exceed the maximum amounts.

All vehicles are fitted with taxi meters that charge maximum approved fares and charges to passengers, though drivers and passengers can enter into a pre-agreement as to the fare amount without the use of a taxi meter.

There are no regulated minimum or maximum fares for other forms of on-demand transport, such as charter vehicles. Drivers and passengers must agree to a pre-agreed or contract fare prior to travel commencing.

  Pre-agreed or contract fares

This is the agreed amount payable for the hire of a taxi or charter vehicle, which must be agreed between the hirer and the driver, or the driver's booking service.

These must be agreed to before the start of a journey and must be recorded in writing or electronically via sms or email.

Pre-agreed or contract fares cannot be arranged if the passenger is engaging the driver at a taxi rank, hailing the vehicle on the street or using Taxi User Subsidy Scheme (TUSS) vouchers as payment or part payment of the fare.

  Taxi surcharges

The State Government has capped surcharges imposed on taxi passengers who pay their fare with non-cash methods to a maximum of five (5) per cent.

  Unauthorised tip charges

Under Australian Consumer Law, drivers should not charge a service tip without the passenger's knowledge, offer or express authority.

While tips are not subject to regulation requirements, complaints will be referred to administrators of Australian Consumer Law, the Department of Commerce and the Consumer Protection Division for further investigation.

  Country taxi fares

Note, all fares and charges are effective from 24 December, 2014 and are GST inclusive.

Definitions

  • Flagfall: This is the minimum charge for the hire of a taxi.
  • Tariff 1: Monday to Friday, 6:00 am to 6:00 pm.
  • Tariff 2: Monday to Friday, 6:00 pm to 6:00 am. Friday 6:00 pm to Monday 6:00 am. Includes all day public holidays.
  • Tariff 3: Applies whenever five (5) or more passengers are carried. This only applies to vehicles manufactured to carry six (6) or more adult passengers.
  • Airport surcharge: Taxi operators are permitted to pass on the airport surcharge and any other toll paid during the hire. This surcharge and any other levy (if applicable) are included in the metered fare and will appear on the receipt.
  • Call out fee: Only to be charged when the taxi has been booked through a registered Taxi Dispatch Service in the metropolitan area, or a booking service advertised by a country taxi plate operator.
  • Country running: A defined kilometre rate (off meter) is applicable for journeys that commence in a control area and end outside the control area.
