How to apply for air travel
For a student who has never accessed the scheme to be accepted the parent/guardian must complete and submit an Initial Application SSTS1 form (pdf 344kb) and an Application For Travel.
- For a student who has previously accessed the scheme only the Application For Travel is required.
- The application is to be submitted at least one month prior to the first date of travel.
- You may apply earlier if you wish - this would allow you to make an early booking and have seating assured on the airline.
- Applications for travel must include both forward and return travel sectors.
- Application forms must be mailed to the Department. Faxed applications for travel will not be accepted.
It is recommended that applications to cover travel for the whole year are lodged at the beginning of the year to allow flexibility and to be more certain of gaining seats on specific flights.
Upon approval of the application, the Department will issue a travel voucher, which will be sent to the address provided on the application form. This travel voucher can be exchanged for a ticket.
Conditions of air travel
- For travel by air, the student is entitled to an amount no greater than the minimum 14-day advance purchase ticket for the most direct route between the student's home and Perth.
- The parents/traveller must pay any additional cost.
- If all of the entitlements are not used before the end of the calendar year, they can not be carried over to the next year - unused trips do not accumulate.
- Travel is subject to the availability of bookings with the airline.
- If you choose to book and pay for your trip before applying for free travel, you may apply for reimbursement by sending a copy of your ticket and a completed Return Trip Application SSTS2 form (pdf 175kb) certified by the school, to the Department's Travel Subsidy Officer.
- If a booking is not available for the date specified on the travel voucher, you may change it. However, if you wish to change the travel date by more than one month, you must contact the Department's Travel Subsidy Officer on 1300 660 147.
- If a trip is cancelled, you must notify the Department immediately so the travel entitlement can be reinstated. Reinstatement of the travel entitlement will depend on the cancellation conditions of the booking.
- The parents/traveller must pay any fees that result from cancelling or changing travel arrangements, or from not booking early enough.
How to apply for a road travel
- Complete an Application for Road Travel Subsidy (pdf 190kb) form and have the form certified by the student's school.
- Send the completed form to the Department for reimbursement.

How to apply for bus and train travel
- Complete an Application for Student Subsidised Travel SSTS2 (pdf 175kb) form and have the form certified by the student's school.
An application needs to be made for each single or return journey required. - Send the completed form to the Department, who will issue a travel voucher which can be exchanged for a ticket.
