Peak period taxi trial extended

Media statement

Release date: 21/01/09

A 12-month trial into peak period taxis in Perth has been extended to March 31 to allow the results of the trial to be fully evaluated.

Transport Minister Simon O’Brien said the Department for Planning and Infrastructure would now review the trial, including the impact on consumers and taxi drivers, and report back by the end of March.

The trial is examining whether peak period taxis should operate between 5am to 9am Monday to Friday. Normal peak period taxi hours are from 5pm-6am Friday and Saturday nights.

“Initial industry data shows the optional extension of peak period taxi operating hours had a positive impact on weekday morning service levels throughout most of 2008,” Mr O’Brien said.

“This review takes into account feedback from taxi customers, taxi drivers and industry-related professionals to give us a good insight into service levels and taxi driver viability.

“Extending the trial allows the Government to make a well-informed decision on whether peak period taxis should continue operating between 5am to 9am Monday to Friday.

“I am aware some non-peak period taxi drivers are concerned that additional taxis on the road at these times may interfere with their viability.

“The taxi industry needs to be financially viable for operators, however, service levels for customers must also be maintained.

“When I consider the evaluation report from the department, I will be specifically mindful of these issues.”

The Minister said feedback from the Australian Hotels Association (AHA) indicated a noticeable increase in service levels for hotel guests on early weekday mornings.
