Better facilities for Walpole’s seniors community

Media statement

Release date: 9/03/09

New seniors’ accommodation in Walpole will be constructed after the State Government granted conditional tenure for land to be developed on the corner of Pier Street and Park Avenue.

Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said it would provide a fantastic opportunity to accommodate existing senior community members, who could need more home assistance in their retirement years.

“It will allow seniors to have extra assistance while remaining in familiar surroundings, near family and friends in the community they may have always lived in,” Mr Grylls said.

“The location of the senior’s accommodation is ideal as it is so near to local shops, health facilities, recreation centres and both of the town’s churches, allowing residents to retain their independence.

“The Department for Planning and Infrastructure’s State Land Service team have worked hard over the last two years to ensure the land could be made available for this valuable facility freeing up capital for the project.

“The Walpole and Districts Seniors Accommodation Inc (WDSA) is delighted to hear the news that the project can go ahead and provide essential accommodation for senior community members.”

The proposed development could provide up to 14 individual units and a recreational and administration centre. It will be a staged development with six units being constructed first, allowing residents to move in early, and then once they are completed, the remainder will be constructed.

The Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC) will also be involved in this project as some of the proposed site has native flora and vegetation that requires DEC’s guidance for where construction can take place.

“It’s a great opportunity to make senior community members lives more comfortable and because of this, the project was fully supported by the Shire of Manjimup, South West Planning and the local community,” the Minister said.
