A workshop today will see the release of a consultation paper on options to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the planning system.
Eric Lumsden, Director General, Department for Planning and Infrastructure said that the Department is seeking industry, state and local government comment on Building a Better Planning System Consultation Paper.
"The paper sets out a broad planning reform agenda for lasting improvement to the planning system and identifies priority areas for reform," Mr Lumsden said.
“The Planning Institute of Australia is hosting the workshop which starts the consultation period and is providing support for this government initiative."
The Department’s focus is around six key areas:
- simplifying the planning approvals
- more effective planning instruments
- prioritising major projects and developments
- integrated Infrastructure coordination
- comprehensive regional and strategic planning frameworks
- strengthening governance and institutional arrangements.
Mr Lumsden said the intention is to provide both strategic and operational improvements.
“Strategic improvements focus on planning outcomes such as infrastructure coordination, housing affordability, environmental issues, public transport use and urban lifestyle.
“Operational improvements are to make the planning processes work better and involve issues such as agency resources, management practices and planning processes."
Building a Better Planning System Consultation Paper is available at www.wapc.wa.gov.au/comment and from the Department (contact 9264 7777).
Comment on the priority actions identified in the paper is invited until Friday 1 May 2009.
“Following the workshop and the consultation period it is intended that a final strategic statement will form the blueprint for reform.
“Improvements to the planning system will ensure that Western Australia remains a highly competitive and attractive place to live," Mr Lumsden said.
