Safe boating message reinforced in Broome

Media statement

Release date: 07/08/09

Marine safety patrols will be boosted at Broome this month.

Department of Transport Regional Transport Officer Peter Westgate said additional marine officers and a patrol vessel from the metropolitan area had been assigned to the Pilbara and Kimberley in July and August to assist local officers as boating numbers peaked at key regional centres.

"The holiday season, coupled with annual fishing events such as the upcoming Billfish Classic, attract an increased number of vessels to local waters and there is a need for additional safety education and compliance patrols," Mr Westgate said.

“The metropolitan officers will join with experienced regional staff to ensure safety on the water is given the priority it deserves.

“The officers will be conducting checks of safety equipment and reinforcing recent changes to the areas for aquatic activities which are clearly shown in the Broome Boating Guide.

Mr Westgate also reminded boat owners to have their Recreational Skipper's Ticket (RST) with them on the water.

"An RST is now one of the basic safety requirements for vessels with a motor of more than 4.5 kilowatts (6HP) and marine officers will be carefully monitoring compliance," he said.

People wanting a copy of the Broome Boating Guide can visit the Department in Napier Terrace.

Information about the RST or safe boating can be found at http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine or contact the department on 9216 8966.
