Changes to waters off Geraldton foreshore address safety issues

Media statement

Release date: 2/10/2009

Safety concerns have prompted changes to the navigable waters off the newly redeveloped
foreshore at Geraldton.

Department of Transport Operations Manager Joyce Newnham said the changes which were
designed to make the waters safer and reduce conflict between users of the waterway, would
see the boating prohibited area extended and a dedicated speed restricted area that can be
used by junior sailors and other recreational craft.

Ms Newnham said the existing boating prohibited area in the Durlacher Street precinct had
been extended to include the Cathedral Avenue precinct.

"The area from the Batavia Marina south to the Francis Street groyne will be free of vessels
making it significantly safer for the increased number of swimmers using the foreshore following
the redevelopment," Ms Newnham said.

"In addition, the existing 5 knot restricted area off the Francis Street precinct has been
increased to 8 knots and extended to the end of the eastern breakwater and north to the limit of
the water ski area.

"The junior sailors and recreational boaters will be able to continue their activity in these waters
and the extension of the restricted area will reduce the disruption of the more passive users
and reduce conflict."

Ms Newnham said the changes had been officially gazetted by the Department and Regional
Transport Officers would be increasing patrols of the area to ensure users had a good
understanding of the new arrangements.

She said the installation and repositioning of navigational markers and new signage at the boat
ramp and the foreshore would also assist users.

"The Department has also updated its popular boating guide for the Mid West which is available
free of charge at the Mid West Regional Office in Chapman Road," Ms Newnham said.
