Boating safety information at Albany Show

Media statement

Release date: 06/11/2009

Information and advice about the Recreational Skipper's Ticket, Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacons (EPIRBs) and local boating issues will be available from the Department of Transport at this weekend's Albany Show.

Transport's award winning Marine Safety Education Trailer will be at the event and Albany based Regional Transport Officers and marine education officers will be on hand to discuss issues with skippers.

Regional Transport Officer Tony Fitzpatrick said the event was well timed to highlight marine safety ahead of the official start of the summer boating season in December.

He said officers would take the opportunity to reinforce the need for skippers to be aware of boat launching ramp etiquette and the need to log on and log off with local sea rescue groups.

"Skippers need to prepare their vessel for launch before they join the queue at the ramp, they also need to be patient and courteous especially at peak times," Mr Fitzpatrick said.

"With the Town Launch Ramp out of operation, the Emu Point facility and others in the area are expected to be very busy this summer. However, delays will be limited if people follow the rules and show courtesy to other users."

Mr Fitzpatrick said a special brochure would also be available at the show detailing the correct type of EPIRB for marine use, and importantly, it gives information about the correct disposal of old beacons.

"People visiting the trailer can also pick up a free copy of the RST Workbook and find out how to join the 126,000 people who have already gained the qualification in WA," Mr Fitzpatrick said.

The workbook contains all the information needed to gain an RST and a list of authorised training and assessment providers will be available from officers at the trailer.

It is compulsory for people in charge of a recreational vessel with a motor of more than 4.5 kilowatts (6HP) to hold an RST or face a fine of $200.

People wanting further information about safe boating can log on to http://www.transport.wa.gov.au/imarine or contact the Department on 9216 8966.
