Bike hire and public transport

Bike hire outlets in Western Australia

There are several places from which you can hire a bicycle. Some will also hire out accessories such as bike carrier racks for cars and bicycle trailers. Many bike shops sell used bikes and buying one of these may prove more economical than hiring, especially for longer periods.

Carrying bikes on or in hire/rental cars

None of the local hire car companies supply vehicles with bicycle carrier racks. Some will allow you to attach your own rack to one of their vehicles but you will be liable for any damage done in the process. However, most of the companies have larger vehicles in their fleet such as station wagons and mini-vans that will easily accommodate a bicycle and luggage in the cargo compartment.

Bikes on trains

Metropolitan

Passengers with bicycles are welcome on Transperth train services within the Perth metropolitan area, although there are some restrictions during weekday peak hour times.

Folding bikes contained in a bag are permitted on all services at all times.

There is no additional fee for bicycles on Transperth trains.

Regional

Passengers with bicycles are welcome on three of the four regional train routes – the Australind running between Perth and Bunbury; the Avonlink running between Perth and Northam; and the Merredinlink running between Perth and Merredin.
There is a small fee per bike and limited storage space, so booking ahead is advised.

Unfortunately, due to space restrictions, bicycles are not permitted on the Prospector service running between Perth and Kalgoorlie.

Bicycles are not permitted on Transperth bus services within the Perth metropolitan area.

Bikes on ferries

The private ferry operators travelling to and from Rottnest Island will carry your bicycle. A small fee is charged per bike.

Bikes on taxis

Standard sedans will not have a bike rack attached however you may be able to remove your bike’s wheel and fit it in the boot. There are some station wagons and mini-vans in the local taxi fleet that can accommodate a bicycle and luggage in the cargo compartment, but you should request these in advance.

Bikes on aircraft

Air travel is often the fastest way to get around Western Australia. A number of scheduled commercial jet services operate between major centres. Skywest for example, has regular services from Perth, to popular tourist destinations including Albany, Broome, Esperance, Kalgoorlie, Exmouth, Kalbarri and Monkey Mia. A small surcharge is made for transporting items such as bicycles, surfboards and golf clubs.

There are also numerous charter flights available to various destinations across the State. Some operators will fly at low altitudes for “flight-seeing”, so check with the airline and local visitor centres for the best value and experience.
