Ride Along the Sunset Coast: Ride 8 – South Beach to Woodman Point

Sand from nearby dunes may periodically cover the path

Sand from nearby dunes may periodically cover the path
near Robb Road (temporarily closed).

Commence your ride or walk at the South Beach foreshore. Head south on the concrete shared path next to the car park side of the kiosk. After a couple of hundred metres the path becomes red-paved as it branches to the right toward the beach and goes between two large pine trees.

Follow the path around a second car park and then south along the top of the dunes. A high chain link fence will be on your left side and the path continues past an old meatworks. At this point you get an excellent view of the coast including several offshore islands. The shared path winds along through Catherine Point Reserve and care should be taken around the sharp bends. Several shipwrecks lie off this stretch of coast and the bay area is very popular with boat owners.

The red-paved shared path sweeps past a park with covered picnic tables, bbqs and bike racks before coming to an abrupt end at McTaggar Cove adjacent to the power station. Continue left along the concrete path and turn into the next street on the right (Robb Road).

Note: that from Oct 2007, Robb Road has been closed due to building work associated with the Port Coogee development and traffic must use Cockburn Road until further notice. Cyclists please take care when riding through this area. The Recreational Shared Path and Cockburn Road are being realigned to the east of this new development. Refer to site signage and contact the City of Cockburn for further details on 9411 3444.

The shared path begins again at the Coogee Beach car park. Here you will find access to the jetty, a general store, public telephone, drinking fountain and toilets. The bitumen shared path resumes the other side of the car park near the store and continues south past the Coogee Beach Caravan Park. Look out for pedestrian activity in this area.

Turn right into a red-paved shared path and cross over Poore Grove before entering a long straight stretch along the dunes. You will see a lighthouse up on a hill to the far left.

At a fork in the path, stay on the left branch. About 500 metres further on you will come to a nice bbq area with public toilets and a nearby jetty. From this beach you will get an excellent view of Fremantle to the north.

Continue on the shared path until reaching a second fork. Go to the right and cross over Nyyerbup Circle. A little further on and you will see the Woodman Point Caravan Park on the left.

Take care crossing over O’Kane Court as this leads to the nearby Woodman Point Recreation Camp and can be a busy road.

Continue to Jervoise Bay Cove and the end of the shared path. Facilities here include a car park, jetty, public toilets, the Cockburn Power Boat Association headquarters and a handy kiosk in a converted warehouse.

Congratulations! You have completed the Sunset Coast Ride !
