Ride through the Hills

The Perth hills are well known to have roads that are popular for group training rides, particularly during spring when the weather is cooler.  The relatively quiet roads, steep gradients and beautiful scenery are an ideal training ground for competitive riders.  However, the winding roads and thick vegetation mean that sight distances are lower than average and that steep gradients can lead to large variations in speed for riders.  For their own safety, riders are reminded to follow the road rules when riding through the hills and to be courteous towards other road users, particularly on roads such as Canning Road which is a truck route carrying fast moving traffic.

This booklet describes three scenic riding and walking routes through the hills of the Darling Ranges, which borders the eastern edge of the Perth metropolitan area.

The three rides are divided into four smaller sections that can be completed individually or in combination. They incorporate many of the natural highlights and visitor attractions in the hills region, including Lesmurdie Falls, Carmel Valley, Mundaring Weir, Bickley Observatory, Cohuna Koala Park and Kalamunda History Village.

"Ride through the Hills" is now available free of charge from most bike shops, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance at 2 Delhi Street West Perth, and various retail outlets along the route itself. An on-line version is also available below.
