HBF Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma

The fifth Freeway Bike Hike was held as part of Cycle Instead Bikeweek 2009.  Launched by the Minister for Transport, the Hon Simon O’Brien MLC, more than 8000 participants completed one of three rides along the Kwinana, Graham Farmer and Mitchell freeways to Joondalup, raising funds for asthma research in the process.  Riders had the choice of a 60km route starting at Kwinana train station, 30km starting at Belmont Park and 10km starting at Greenwood train station.  Check out the event’s official website for more photos from the day.

Town of Bassendean Family Social Bike Ride

An easy family ride for all ages along the river, conducted by the Bassendean Bicycle User Group. Start and end at Sandy Beach Reserve in Bassendean. A free lunch and refreshments will be provided after the ride.

The Munda Biddi Trail Foundation hosted a ride along this new and exciting recreational cycling route. Participants had the choice of advanced, intermediate and novice/family routes that ranged from 14 to 20km in length. Each group enjoyed a free healthy breakfast at the half-way point. Riders set off from Sculpture Park in Mundaring.

The tenth fundraising ride for the Canteen organisation proved to be another success with 114 riders taking part. These riders were placed into groups according to their normal speed and followed a set route from Bassendean to Busselton. The ride took three days and included overnight stops at Pinjarra and Brunswick Junction.

Summer Concert in the Park for Cyclists

Spin those wheels along the river to Banks Reserve in Mt Lawley for a free Summer Concert. Cycling WA welcomes all cyclists to enjoy an afternoon of musical fusion of Reggae Funk Rock from the band Sneaky Weasel Gang. Bring your own picnic, there will be coffee and ice-cream vans on site. Banks Reserve is on Joel Terrace and is accessible via the Mt Lawley principal shared path.

Peel Region Cycle Instead Program

The South Metropolitan Public Health Unit in conjunction with local organisations and bike clubs, is coordinating a range of cycling-related events during Bikeweek. These include a family breakfast and ride, workplace challenge, BMX competition, youth cycling rally and "Have a Try" social events hosted by the Peel BMX Club, Peel District Cycling Club, Mandurah Over 55 Cycle Club and Silver Wheels Cycle Club.

Gosnells Cycle Instead Program

Various bike events will be held during bike week to promote cycling within the City of Gosnells. These include free light healthy breakfast available to cyclists, hosted by the City of Gosnells.  Cyclists from other areas are reminded that they can bring their bikes by train or by car. There will also be social rides commencing from the Gosnells Clock Tower, cycling skills sessions, a young rider session hosted by the Gosnells Bicycle User Group and a “Save a K” competition for staff, residents and schools.

Town of Victoria Park and City of South Perth Bike to Work Challenge

Get some colleagues together and organise your own workplace Bike to Work Challenge. The week will end with a cyclist's breakfast on Friday 27 March at Technology Park in Bentley starting at 7am. Access is via the shared path on Hayman Road. Bikeweek merchandise, maps and friendly advice will be available. Plus – you can enter the draw to win a bike.

Coffee and fruit in the CBD

A free healthy breakfast organised by the Bicycle Transportation Alliance for local riders at Caffissimo café at the WA Art Gallery, James Street Mall.

Ride to Recquatic

A free healthy breakfast organised by the City of Kwinana at the Recquatic Centre for local riders.

UWA Nedlands Bike to Work Breakfast

A free healthy breakfast was organised by the City of Nedlands at UWA for anyone who cycled to the university or nearby workplaces.  An estimated 300 participants enjoyed the hospitality.  A more complete summary and photographs from the event can be viewed here.

Subiaco Bike to Work Breakfast

A free healthy breakfast provided by the City of Subiaco at the Dome Cafe in Rokeby Road, Subiaco for anyone cycling into work. Cyclists that register by Friday 20 March, will go into a draw to win a double movie pass. Prizes, giveaways, cycling information and discounts for purchases at Bike Force Subiaco will also be provided on the day.

Cottesloe Bike to Work Breakfast

A free healthy breakfast organised by the Town of Cottesloe at Barchetta Café on Marine Parade for anyone who cycles to work in the area.

Fremantle Bike to Work Breakfast

A free healthy breakfast organised by the City of Fremantle at the Fremantle Leisure Centre in Shuffrey Street for anyone who cycles to work in the area. A mechanic will be on hand to check bikes and provide information about maintenance.

Melville Big Bikeweek Breakfast

A free healthy breakfast was organised by the City of Melville at Apex Reserve near Canning Bridge, Applecross for anyone who cycled to work or for recreation in the area.

Belmont Bike to Work Breakfast

A free healthy breakfast organised by the City of Belmont at Faulkner Park for anyone who cycles to work or school. A free maintenance workshop will also be held.

Cockburn Community Coastal Ride

A family and community ride from Woodman Point to Port Coogee and return. Led by an experienced guide, the 30 min ride will be on paths and participants can enjoy a free healthy breakfast afterwards. There will also be activities for parents and children such as face painting, bike servicing and plenty of giveaways.

Rockingham Bike, Bite and Family Ride

A record 157 people participated in a family ride from Churchill Park, taking in the picturesque Rockingham foreshore. The ride was led by experienced members of the Peel District Social Cycling Club, with riders having the choice of a 5km or 12km route.

A free morning tea was provided after the ride and participants could join activities such as bicycle checks and engraving.

Whiteman Park Bike Family Fun Day

Whiteman Park is hosting an interactive display by the WA Historical Cycle Club, including some wonderful vintage bicycles, to celebrate the end of Bicycle Week. These free celebrations will also include special activities to promote safe family cycling in the park. Decorate your bike at home or at Revolutions transport museum (decorations supplied) for the chance to win a great prize! If you’re under ten years old, don’t miss your chance to take on our cycle challenge too!  Visit the Park website for more details. Autumn River Ramble

A short community ride organised by the City of Bayswater, along the river between Bardon Park in Maylands and Riverside Gardens in Bayswater. A healthy brunch will be held for participants at the conclusion of the ride.
