HBF Freeway Bike Hike for Asthma |
|
The fifth Freeway Bike Hike was held as part of Cycle Instead Bikeweek 2009. Launched by the Minister for Transport, the Hon Simon O’Brien MLC, more than 8000 participants completed one of three rides along the Kwinana, Graham Farmer and Mitchell freeways to Joondalup, raising funds for asthma research in the process. Riders had the choice of a 60km route starting at Kwinana train station, 30km starting at Belmont Park and 10km starting at Greenwood train station. The Munda Biddi Trail Foundation hosted a ride along this new and exciting recreational cycling route. Participants had the choice of advanced, intermediate and novice/family routes that ranged from 14 to 20km in length. Each group enjoyed a free healthy breakfast at the half-way point. Riders set off from Sculpture Park in Mundaring. |

The tenth fundraising ride for the Canteen organisation proved to be another success with 114 riders taking part. These riders were placed into groups according to their normal speed and followed a set route from Bassendean to Busselton. The ride took three days and included overnight stops at Pinjarra and Brunswick Junction. |

Spin those wheels along the river to Banks Reserve in Mt Lawley for a free Summer Concert. Cycling WA welcomes all cyclists to enjoy an afternoon of musical fusion of Reggae Funk Rock from the band Sneaky Weasel Gang. Bring your own picnic, there will be coffee and ice-cream vans on site. Banks Reserve is on Joel Terrace and is accessible via the Mt Lawley principal shared path. |

The South Metropolitan Public Health Unit in conjunction with local organisations and bike clubs, is coordinating a range of cycling-related events during Bikeweek. These include a family breakfast and ride, workplace challenge, BMX competition, youth cycling rally and "Have a Try" social events hosted by the Peel BMX Club, Peel District Cycling Club, Mandurah Over 55 Cycle Club and Silver Wheels Cycle Club.

Various bike events will be held during bike week to promote cycling within the City of Gosnells. These include free light healthy breakfast available to cyclists, hosted by the City of Gosnells. Cyclists from other areas are reminded that they can bring their bikes by train or by car. There will also be social rides commencing from the Gosnells Clock Tower, cycling skills sessions, a young rider session hosted by the Gosnells Bicycle User Group and a “Save a K” competition for staff, residents and schools. |

A record 157 people participated in a family ride from Churchill Park, taking in the picturesque Rockingham foreshore. The ride was led by experienced members of the Peel District Social Cycling Club, with riders having the choice of a 5km or 12km route.
A free morning tea was provided after the ride and participants could join activities such as bicycle checks and engraving. |
