MPs and Mayors' Bike Ride 2011

Decision makers experience the joys of cycling

A group of WA’s key decision makers, experienced the joys of cycling in Perth on Tuesday 22 March, when they took part in the 17th MPs and Mayors' Bike Ride as part of Bikeweek.

The annual ride highlights features of the Perth Bicycle Network infrastructure and the benefits of cycling.

The ride was organised by Department of Transport's Bikewest Branch and hosted by the Town of Victoria Park with support from the Burswood Park Board, Public Transport Authority, WA Police and Main Roads WA.

The Minister for Transport, Honourable Troy Buswell MLA, led the group of more than 50 dignitaries on the ride from Parliament House to Burswood Park.

Minister Buswell was joined by his parliamentary colleagues, representatives of Local Government from Armadale, Bassendean, Cambridge, Fremantle, Joondalup, Melville, Perth, Vincent and Victoria Park, and cycling advocacy groups.

About the 2011 Hosts: The Town of Victoria Park

The 2011 MPs and Mayors’ Bike Ride (12km) started at Parliament House, continuing over the Narrows Bridge and along the South Perth Foreshore. The ride continued in Victoria Park and featured the recreational river foreshore shared path, as well as the high standard red asphalt shared paths around the Burswood complex.

Victoria Park Mayor, Trevor Vaughan, said the Town of Victoria Park had worked hard to develop a well connected cycling network and it was the result of many years of close cooperation with the Department of Transport.

This partnership is centered on the Perth Bicycle Network Local Government Grants program, whereby the Department offers up to 50 per cent funding for cycling infrastructure projects.
