Ride along the Sunset Coast:
Ride 3 - Sorrento Beach to Trigg Island

Commence your ride or walk at the Sorrento Surf Lifesaving Club headquarters right on the beach. Head south on the red-paved shared path as it continues down the beach side of West Coast Drive. This section to Trigg follows the coastline very closely and is therefore fairly undulating as it goes up and down the primary sand hills.

About one kilometre south of Sorrento, the shared path becomes concrete. You will travel past the Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club (MAAC) building and care should be taken as the path crosses the busy driveway to the clubhouse. Immediately after the MAAC, the path narrows until you reach the corner of Beach Road where it changes to the standard width red-paved path.

Marmion Angling Club

Take care when crossing driveways such as the one into the Marmion Angling and Aquatic Club.

Man fishing

Many good fishing spots can be found along the entire ride

The shared path continues south past Watermans Beach with public toilets and an excellent lookout platform. Be careful of the access road to the beach near Ada Street. A little further on and the path skirts to the eastern side of the Western Australian Marine Research Laboratories which is a scientific facility run by the local Fisheries Department. Although the labs are not open to the public, the car park is available for beach goers on the weekend so take care when crossing the entrance. The shared path now becomes concrete for a few hundred metres before returning to a red-paved surface at the North Beach lookout. A short detour down Castle Street (which runs off West Coast Drive) will take you to a shopping area and a museum.

Just past North Beach, the shared path becomes narrow bitumen until reaching the Centaur shipwreck monument at the top of the next hill. To the south is Hamersley Pool where you will find public toilets and a drinking fountain.

The Centaur was a Scottish-built brig that ran aground on an offshore reef in 1874 whilst heading for Fremantle. The ship and its load of lead ore went down about three kilometres off the coast.

The path then becomes concrete at Mettams Pool and narrows even further. There are more public toilets here. Look for traffic entering and exiting the Bennion Beach car park where the shared path becomes red-paved for the remaining stretch to Trigg.

South of Bennion Beach, the shared path follows the western side of The Esplanade and Clarko Reserve. Conclude this stage at the popular surfing and fishing spot of Trigg, which has a good range of facilities including a restaurant, toilets, public telephone, drinking fountain and bicycle racks.

Trigg path

At several spots north of Trigg the path runs close to the rugged shoreline
