Section 3 - Carmel to Bickley

At the end of Palmateer Drive, turn left into Carmel Road and then immediately right into Glenisla Road. After about one kilometre, turn left into Pickering Brook Road and continue past the golf course. There is also a post office, public telephone and convenience store on the right hand side just before the course.

Follow Pickering Brook Road up a slight climb past the primary school until you reach Bracken Road. Ride over a couple of picturesque little bridges and turn left and then immediately right into Patterson Road. A short climb and this stretch takes you all the way north to Hainault Vineyard. An interesting detour can be found a short ride east of the vineyard on Walnut Road.

The Bickley area is now home to a number of award-winning wineries, with several of the larger operations offering tasting facilities and cellar door sales. Opening times are normally shown on signs near the entry roads. Although not as well developed as the Swan Valley wine area, the Bickley vineyards produce some very unique vintages.

Perth Observatory
Dome of the main telescope at Perth Observatory, Bickley

Perth Observatory is located at the end of Walnut Road, about one kilometre east of Hainault Vineyard.

Opened in 1896, the Observatory is the only significant astronomical facility between South Africa and the Eastern States. Sitting on one of the highest points along the escarpment, it has a variety of displays, a shop and an interesting museum that can be explored during the day.

Visitors can also view the wonders of our southern skies by booking a public night tour. These are conducted on a regular basis during the warmer months.

Public toilets at the complex are open on weekdays.

Remember Cycling Courtesy:
Be as visible as possible. On the road, avoid riding directly into a rising or setting sun as drivers may not see you.
