Ride 3 - Southern River to Masons Landing

From the Richard Rushton Community Centre, head north over a spectacular little bridge that spans the Southern River. Follow the path as it winds in an arc alongside Cardington Way, Princess Street, Moss Street and Yulan Court.

Southern River bridge
A small bridge carries the shared path over Southern River.

At the end of Yulan Court, the path travels under Corfield Street and then northwards between Burslem Drive and the river.

The path then sweeps sharply to the left, under Burslem Drive and past the Thornlie TAFE campus. Near this point, the Southern River joins the Canning River. A little further on and you will pass a path leading off to the right for Maddington Metro shopping centre.

About 300 metres further on you will come to the Thornlie Community Centre which has public toilets. Follow the shared path as it winds alongside Jacqueline Drive and under Royal Street. Further along it passes under a railway bridge and comes very close to the water’s edge.

Continue down Woodloes Street for a few hundred metres and complete your ride at Masons Landing Park. Here you will find public toilets, sheltered picnic facilities, barbeques and bike parking.

The major shopping complex of Westfield Carousel is only about five hundred metres away. To reach the complex, turn left into Liege Street and cross at the traffic control signals on Albany Highway.

Continue on the shared path as it winds through an area known as Hester Park. This is a combination of grassed open space and natural bushland along the lower reaches of the Canning River. The path comes to an end at the busy intersection of Nicholson and Spencer Roads. Cross Nicholson Road at the traffic lights and on the other side, head eastwards along a path over the nearby bridge. Immediately after the bridge, take a left turn into Woodloes Street. A historic house is located about 200 metres along this quiet road.

Woodloes Homestead was built in 1874 on the banks of the Canning River. It features a vast collection of pioneer furniture and household items. The Homestead museum is open to the public every Sunday or at other times by special arrangement.
