South West metropolitan roads

Since 2001, the State Government has been examining Perth's future transport needs. This has involved consulting and working closely with freight industry, community and government representatives.

The process was launched in 2001 with a Freight Network Review , which set future goals for road and rail transport infrastructure.

Following this review, a Local Impacts Committee was established to identify and recommend ways to improve the safety and efficiency of major roads in the south west metropolitan corridor (see study area map).

Chaired by the Member for Riverton, Tony McRae MLA, the Committee included representatives from State and local government, the freight industry and the community.

The Committee's first task, completed in January 2003, recommended the alignment of Roe Highway (Stage 7).

The second task was to develop a strategy for managing traffic on the major roads in the south west metropolitan corridor, focusing on Leach Highway, South Street and Stock Road; and to prepare a road development plan.

The third task was to find ways to protect local communities from the impacts of freight and general traffic.

Tasks two and three were carried out in two stages, with the focus on traffic efficiency, road safety, social and environmental amenity.

The first stage identified problems on the roads in the study area. The outcomes of this work are contained in the report "Review of major roads in the south west metropolitan corridor, Stage 1 report, December 2004"

The second stage identified solutions to traffic-related problems. These included changes to road layouts, intersections, improved street lighting, anti-skid treatments and measures to reduce water pollution from road drainage.

The community feedback and the assessment of the solutions are detailed in two reports:

The Committee’s work is now completed and its recommendations are contained in the Local Impacts Committee Final Report.
