Harbours, marinas, jetties and moorings

The Department is responsible for the management of coastal facilities for small craft around the State.

This includes:

  • Management of facilities and sites at approximately 50 discrete locations throughout Western Australia.
  • Management of a wide range of facilities varying from major metropolitan boat harbours (eg Hillarys Boat Harbour) to single regional jetties (eg Leeman) to quarries (eg Roelands) and commercial ports (eg Wyndham).
  • Administration of approximately 2,000 licences for jetties, ferries and mooring areas.
  • Administration of the Small Craft Facilities Trust Fund under which fees and charges raised at boat harbours etc. are retained for funding the cost of operating and maintaining these facilities.

The owner of a vessel using a Department of Transport facility is required to provide proof of compliance with electrical and gas requirements and proof of appropriate third party liability insurance before pen or mooring licences are issued.

Information on how to comply with these requirements is outlined in the Electrical, gas, and insurance requirements for Transport operated maritime facilities publication (pdf 807kb)
