Revalidation of Certificates of Competency
How to Revalidate
All Trading Certificates of Competency and all new Fishing certificates of competency are valid for a maximum period of five years they then must be revalidated. If you don't revalidate your certificate of competency it will expire and is not therefore able to be used to operate a commercial vessel.
Fishing certificates of competency issued prior to 12 February 2011 are not subject to Revalidation.
To revalidate the following certificates:

Coxswain - Instructor of a Commercial Ski Boat

Coxswain
-
Master Class 5 Trade
-
Master Class 5 Fishing
-
Marine Engine Driver Grade 2
You are required to forward your original certificate of competency (book) along with:

an application form
-
your current 1st aid (HLTFA301B) certificate

An application for revalidation will not be processed unless all the requirements are received.
Once all requirements are met certificates are revalidated for a further five years.
To revalidate the following certificates of competency:

Mate 4 Trade

Mate 4 Fishing

Master Class 4 Trade

Master Class 4 Fishing
-
Master Class 3 Trade
-
Master Class 3 Fishing
-
Marine Engine Driver Grade 1

Engineer Class 3
You are required to forward your original certificate of competency (book) along with:

an application form
-
12 months documented sea service in an appropriate role
-
your current 1st aid (HLTFA301B) certificate
The sea service requirement for the revalidation of Fishing certificates does not always need to meet the full 12 month requirement; those Masters who operate in Seasonal Fisheries can demonstrate continuous employment each fishing season in the five-year period immediately preceding the date of application.
Sea service requiremnts for Revalidation will be contained in a revalidation notification sent prior to a certificate of competency expiration date.

What to do if you do not have the Sea Service to Revalidate
You will have to satisfy all the other requirements listed above and pass an oral examination.
Oral examinations will be available in Fremantle on request. The Department has several accredited oral examiners in regional areas; please contact the Department for more details.
The oral examination for revalidation will concentrate on determining your level of awareness regarding various changes which have taken place in recent years but can cover any of the topics for the issuance of that level of certificate of competency.
