Sharing the rivers

Swan Canning riverpark aquatic use review and management framework.

Boat owners have until the end of February to comment on proposed changes to how they use the Swan and Canning rivers.

The changes, including new speed restrictions, modifications for water ski and personal water craft (PWC) operations and the closure of some areas to motorised vessels are features of a proposed new management plan designed to ensure the safe, sustainable and equitable use of the Swan Canning Riverpark into the future.

Boat registrations in the metropolitan area have grown from 36,000 to 53,000 in the last decade and expected continued growth will place even greater demands on the waterways.

The Department of Transport in conjunction with the Swan River Trust produced Sharing the Rivers - Swan Canning Riverpark Aquatic Use Review and Management Framework Draft Report following extensive consultation with user groups over the last 18 months.

Feedback received in relation to the Sharing the Rivers plan will be considered ahead of the introduction of the proposed changes for the 2012/13 boating season.

  • The opportunity for public comments closed on 29 February 2012.

A copy of the draft summary document and the full draft management plan are available to download below.
