On the road as a P plater

Once you have:

You will now have gained your Provisional driver's licence (a P plater). This means you can now drive unsupervised on all Western Australian roads, although there are still certain conditions:

  • You must display 'P' plates at all times when driving

Different colour P-plates will distinguish between those provisional licence holders who can or cannot drive because of night-time restrictions. You will be required to drive under these night-time restrictions for the first 6 months of getting your provisional licence.

Provisional licence holders who are subject to driving under the night time restrictions will need to display P plates with a white 'P' on a red background  Night time P-plate
After the provisional licence holder is no longer required to drive under the night time restrictions, they will need to display P plates with a white 'P' on a green background for the remainder of their provisional period.  Normal P-plate

  • You must have a zero blood alcohol level at all times when driving
  • Committing certain driving offences could mean you automatically lose your licence.
    • You will need to drive under these conditions for two years. Once this period has been completed you will have a full driving licence. For more information on the restrictions applicable to P-platers, please see the Novice driver section.
