To get your learner's permit, you’ll need to pass a theory test that assesses your understanding of the Western Australian (WA) road rules. Fees apply.
If you've completed the Keys4Life program at school, you can skip the theory test by presenting your Keys4Life certificate when applying for your learner's permit.
There are specific theory tests for cars and motorcycles/mopeds.

When to sit the theory test
When you are confident you can pass the car or motorcycle/moped theory test, you'll need to take it at a DTMI service centre or regional agent.
An alternative, oral test (spoken test) is available for people who have difficulty with literacy, reading English or using a computer.
Computerised Theory Test
You can take the computer theory test when you apply for your learner’s permit.
Pass marks
- Cars – you must get 24 out of the 30 multiple choice questions correct.
- Motorcycles /mopeds – you must get 28 out of the 35 multiple choice questions correct.
Key information
- Tests must start before 3:45 pm (Mon–Fri), except for Joondalup Driver Assessment Centre, which allows starts from 7:15am until 4:45 pm (Mon–Sat).
- No appointment is needed at metro service centres (unless translation services are required).
- Regional centres or agents may require you to call ahead.
- If you don’t pass, you’ll need to resit the test on another day and pay a resit fee.
If you prefer, you can take the computer test with the help of a translator. We‘ll need to organise a translator on your behalf, so please let us know in advance.
Oral Theory Test (spoken test)
You may be eligible to complete the theory test orally (spoken test), if you have difficulty reading or using computers.
If required, the oral theory test can be conducted in a language other than English using NAATI translators. Please let us know if you require a translator when applying for your learner’s permit.
The spoken test can only be attempted once a day.
