Oakajee Port and Rail
About the project
The Oakajee Port and Rail project is a strategic development to serve the projected future needs of the mining industry in the Mid West region. It has 2 components:
- Deepwater port at Oakajee (20 km north of Geraldton).
- Rail network connecting the mines to the port.
Oakajee Port and Rail Pty Ltd (OPR) is the private infrastructure provider responsible for development of the port and rail infrastructure. This includes providing most of the funds and obtaining all the necessary approvals.
State and Commonwealth governments will fund the common-use port infrastructure, including:
- Turning basin.
- Navigation aids.
- Tug and boat pens.
- Port administration offices.
- Access roads.
The project has an anticipated cost of $4.37 billion.
The Department of Transport supports the Department of State Development by:
- Leading the Port Infrastructure Group, which monitors the technical aspects of the port development to ensure that the design meets the State Government's requirements.
- Developing a framework to assess proposed rail corridors and prescribe technical specifications for connectivity with the wider freight transport system.
The 570 km rail network will be coordinated by the Public Transport Authority.
When completed, the port will operate by the Geraldton Port Authority.

History of the project
Mining operations at iron ore deposits several hundred kilometres to the north-east and south-east of Geraldton required that a new port be constructed to support the existing Port of Geraldton. It was determined that Oakajee was the best location to develop the required infrastructure.
The Department of Transport's predecessor the Department for Planning and Infrastructure (DPI) sent out a Request for Proposal (RFP) for a private infrastructure provider to develop the new port.
On 1 January 2009, the Department of State Development (DSD) took over responsibility for the Oakajee project. A State Development Agreement was signed with Oakajee Port and Rail Pty Ltd (OPR) in March 2009, and a detailed Implementation Agreement is currently being developed between DSD and OPR.
OPR finalised its bankable feasibility study in December 2010 and achieved financial close.
