About rail safety

The Department of Transport is responsible for a number of important rail functions in WA including safety, coordination and planning.

In Western Australia, the railway has been a vital means of connection, expansion and progress since early days. Formerly the railways were Government owned or served specific local industries like forestry, but today there is a greater variety of operators and traffic.

The need for safety regulation of the rail industry has arisen as interstate traffic has grown, highly specialised and innovative railways have expanded in the North West and smaller tourist and heritage organisations continue to run portions of the former WA Government Railways network.
