About us
In its role as industry regulator, the Department:
- leases taxi plates;
- sets taxi fares;
- sets and regulates industry standards, including vehicle safety and customer service standards;
- ensures plate conditions such as minimum quotas and operating hours are fulfilled;
- registers taxi drivers and issues driver IDs;
- manages and administers subsidies for the industry and customers including the Taxi Users Subsidy Scheme and the Multi-purpose taxi (MPT) cadetship scheme; and
- acts as a taxi customer advocate and investigates unresolved customer complaints for Western Australians.
Key taxi industry statistics
As at February 2008 there are:

1,714 taxis servicing the Perth metropolitan area; and

343 country taxis and 146 private taxis servicing Western Australia's country areas.
The West Australian Taxi industry is growing fast to accommodate the ever increasing population. To help meet the demand of drivers, Passenger Services is providing incentives for taxi drivers from Australia's eastern states to come to Western Australia.
Eastern state drivers will receive a 100% subsidy on their training to become qualified WA taxi drivers.
West Australian students will also be targeted with a 50% subsidy on their training.
