Secure taxi rank extension trial (STRET)

STRET round 2 closed on 5 October 2009.

History

The Department of Transport (the Department) has funded security personnel at taxi ranks in the popular night-time entertainment precincts of Northbridge and Fremantle since 2002. Taxis are a popular mode of transport home from these areas.

The presence of security guards helps taxi patrons and taxi drivers to feel safe by deterring and managing violent and anti-social behaviour. This in turn can encourage taxi drivers to service night-time entertainment areas resulting in shorter waiting times for customers.

On a 1-year trial basis in 2009-10, the Department is extending co-funding of security guards and security infrastructure to other Local Governments in the Perth metropolitan area. This scheme is called the Secure Taxi Rank Extension Trial (STRET).
