The Department together with the Taxi Council of Western Australia (TCWA) are trialling Rank Marshals at selected secure taxi ranks during busy Friday and Saturday night periods. View the media statement to find out more.

Aims of the trial

The aim of the trial is to enhance secure taxi rank efficiency which may deliver other benefits:

• Reduce taxi customer waiting times during very busy periods,
• Reduce the incidence of anti-social and violent behaviour that can occur at the ranks when people have to wait longer than they would like for a taxi,
• Thereby improve taxi patron and taxi driver safety,
• Help make Northbridge a safer and more comfortable precinct for all to enjoy by improving transport efficiency out of the area.
  

Role of the Rank Marshal(s)

• Be an interface between taxi passengers and taxi drivers to help make the rank efficient and pleasant for both,
• Provide assistance to taxi passengers such as:
  • Coordinate groups and taxi sharing upon request by willing patrons,
  • Educate passengers about their rights and responsibilities when using taxis and about taxi drivers’ rights and responsibilities,
  • Educate passengers that taxi driver’s have the legal right to request a deposit equal to the estimated fare before commencing the trip. Assist drivers to receive deposits from customers when requested.
    

Rank Marshal Recruitment

Ideally, Rank Marshals will have experience in the Perth taxi industry. Marshals should:

• Enjoy interacting with people and have good interpersonal and liaison skills
• Have a passion for the improvement of the taxi industry
• Have an engaging smile!
