Step 5: Successfully complete the Taxi driver training course

This taxi driver training course is made up of units covering the range of skills and knowledge needed to effectively meet the needs of Perth taxi customers.

The course is completed in two stages; the self-paced learning package and in-class training. The self-paced learning package contains essential information about Perth geography and being part of the taxi industry. The in-class training covers all other aspects of operating a taxi, such as driving and customer service skills.

Training benefits for taxi drivers

The training course is made up of National Road Transport competency units, so if an applicant moves to another part of the transport industry or to the taxi industry in another state the training units they have completed will be recognised.

When you have completed the course, you will be issued a ‘Statement of Attainment’ for the units you have completed. The course can be completed with one of the following approved training providers:

Step 6: Pass the Taxi Driver Registration Test

After you have completed your training you will be tested by DoT assessors. This test is designed to confirm that you have all the essential skills necessary to meet the needs of taxi passengers. The test involves an on-road test in a simulated taxi.

From 3 February 2014, the Department of Transport introduced changes to the way taxi driver candidates are assessed. The changes are designed to more accurately assess the skills needed to be a taxi driver in the Perth Taxi Control Area (TCA).

The core competencies are split into three families shown in the diagram below:

Taxi drive core competencies

You are required to complete a computerised theory and practical test.

Stage one - the theory test

The theory test is the first component of the registration test. The test contains 30 questions separated as follows;

  1. Passenger welfare & customer service (12 questions).
  2. Perth geography (10 questions).
  3. Fares and payment (8 questions).

You will need to answer 27 questions correctly within 30 minutes to pass the test. Upon passing the theory test you can immediately book to sit the second component of the registration test.

Please visit the Passenger Services office to sit the theory test after you have completed the accredited taxi driver training course.

The theory test is conducted and may be booked at:

  • 20 Brown Street
    East Perth
    Western Australia 6004

Theory tests cannot be booked in advance.

Stage two - the practical test

The practical test is the second component of the registration test.

The practical test is conducted and may be booked at:

  • 20 Brown Street
    East Perth
    Western Australia 6004

The practical test is performed in a simulated taxi and includes two exercises;

  1. Prominent destination: You will be asked to drive to a prominent Perth destination without the use of a map book. You will pass if you are within 15% of the total distance for the journey. E.g. if the total distance allowed is 2km, then a distance of 2.25km is a pass, and a distance of 2.35km is a fail.
  2. Map book and TUSS: You must use a map book to locate and drive to a residential address within 15% tolerance of the total distance. You will have 3 minutes to locate the address using the map book at the beginning of the journey. In this exercise, you will also be presented with a TUSS membership and will have to accurately complete a TUSS voucher and calculate the subsidy.

Meter usage and all aspects of the WA Taxi Driver Code of Conduct will be assessed throughout the test. You will also be required to drive in a smooth and consistent manner as prescribed under the Road Traffic Act 1974.

Step 7: Obtain your "T" extension and taxi driver identification card

Once you have successfully completed your registration test, your T extension and a metropolitan taxi driver identification card will be issued to you. This will enable you to operate a taxi in Perth.

Ongoing training for taxi drivers

The Department of Transport is committed to maintaining and improving the standard of service provided to taxi passengers and has introduced:

Retraining

Taxi drivers who do not perform to the required standard will be required to complete appropriate retraining in order to continue operating a taxi.

Professional Development Training

All Perth taxi drivers are required to complete 4 hours of professional development training once every two years, prior to renewing their Taxi Driver Identification Card.

Regional Taxi Drivers

The application process for country drivers is different to that for metropolitan drivers. You do not have to undergo the formal training, aptitude or registration tests. You are also exempt from the four hours of professional development training every two years that all metropolitan taxi drivers are required to complete.
