TravelSmart Household is an innovative approach to helping Perth residents to reduce the costs of car use. The TravelSmart Household Program employs "individualised marketing" techniques, which are proven to increase the uptake of public transport patronage, cycling and walking. The program commenced in Perth in 1997 with a pilot project in the South Perth area. Positive results were generated by the pilot, indicating that Perth people were eager to support the TravelSmart concept, change the way we travel and benefit ourselves and the community. This success led to the expansion of TravelSmart Household to many suburbs across the metropolitan area.
TravelSmart works because there is significant potential for change:
- People average 19 car trips per week. - There is a convenient alternative option available for almost half of all car trips made in Perth. - Residents often just need local information to help them to walk, cycle or take public transport. |
