Project achievements

TravelSmart Household has achieved significant outcomes in each project area to date.

Project benefits have proven to be sustainable, with lower levels of car use recorded in South Perth four years after the initial TravelSmart Household pilot took place.

Typical TravelSmart Household project results (averaged across eight projects, with 143,000 residents) are listed in the table below:

Combined community benefits projected across all completed projects to the end of 2006 (284,560 residents) are (annually):

  • Reduction of over 20 million car trips

  • 200 million fewer car kilometres

  • 60,000 tonnes less greenhouse gas emissions

  • Extra 3 million public transport boardings

  • 5 million extra hours of physical activity from more walking and cycling trips

  • Reduction of fuel use by 20 million litres, saving a total of $24 million

... All this from many residents changing just one or two car trips each week!
