TravelSmart to School results

In 2008 sixty-two schools participated in the program, drawn from 24 different local government areas. Together the 197 primary school classes that completed the program saved 2,900 kilograms of greenhouse gases and achieved a 10% average reduction in car trips.

Results table for TravelSmart to School 2007

Schools that participated in the program:  62
Change in greenhouse gas:  -2900 kg
 Percentage increase in walking:  27%
 Percentage increase in cycling:  1%
Percentage increase in car pooling:  3%
Percentage decrease in single family car use:  10%

Outstanding schools

The following schools are recognised for their winning efforts during the 2008 program:

Greatest Overall Decrease in Car Use: Wembley Downs Primary (Year 6/7’s)
The results from the Wembley Downs Year 6/7’s class was fantastic.  The year 6/7 class made a 62.7% decrease in car use during their TravelSmart Challenge Week.

Greatest Increase in Walking: Carmel School (Year 5.2)
Mrs Higginbottom’s class made a 35% increase in walking over the course of their TravelSmart Challenge Week.

Greatest Increase in Cycling: Singleton Primary (Class 2A)
The winning class from Singleton Primary made a 15% increase in cycling. Making a significant increase in cycling is often more difficult than getting an increase in walking, so this was a fantastic result.

Three Special Commendation Awards were also given out to schools that had made a special effort:

Best Promotional Campaign: South Perth Primary
For their ‘Awesome Walksome Wednesdays’ which happens every week and the Golden Boot Award, which is given to the class with the lowest car use. The students have continued surveying the school on a weekly basis.

Great Overall Results: Applecross Primary
Applecross Primary had 6 classes that made a 20% or greater decrease in car use during their TravelSmart Challenge Week.

Best Teacher Involvement: Beckenham Primary
The Beckenham Primary Millennium Kids team did a great job publicising their walking and cycling events to the school, and were awarded for the great relationship between the student team and the staff. The Principal made a special effort to walk and ride with the students which was fantastic to see.
