Volunteers

A Walking School Bus can start with two volunteers.  However, for ongoing success, it is recommended to have at least three volunteers.  The more volunteers there are sharing the workload, the easier it is.

A Volunteer Coordinator is required for each Walking School Bus, and it is important that the coordinator has the support of other volunteers.  Volunteers need to be aware that other roles include recruiting new volunteers, organising the initial launch, and recording attendance.  All of these roles can be rotated over the school term or year, or shared among the group.

A volunteer is usually the parent of a child participating in the walk.  It can also be an aunty, grandparent or local community member.

Working with Children Check

Non-parent volunteers such as grandparents, other relatives or friends must obtain a “Working with Children Check”.  This is a photo ID card (similar to a driver’s licence) that is valid for 3 years.

Parents of children enrolled at the school do not require a Working with Children Check.

Further information can be found on the Working With Children website.
