Walk to School Wednesday – 4 November 2009

Walk Week 2009 has been a fantastic success for schools. This year, 225 schools totalling over 47000 students participated in Walk to School Wednesday or a walking event.

Online registrations for Walk To School Day 2010 on Wednesday 3 November will be opened in April 2010. Those schools who would like to re-register can email us.

Walk to School Wednesday encourages students to become more physically active by walking to school the morning of Wednesday 4th November 2009 and reducing the number of short car trips to school.

Did you know that:

  • Children’s travel habits are influenced by their parents’ travel choices.  Parents can set a good example by walking or cycling with their children to school, the local library or park. Walking gives children health, educational and social developmental benefits.

  • If you were to walk non-stop for 10 years you would walk about 438,000 km!  This is further than here to the moon (the moon is a short 384,403 km from Earth).

  • To walk the circumference of the Earth (40,075 km) you would need to walk non-stop for 333 days.

  • If this seems a bit too far the circumference of Australia (including Tasmania) is only 25,760 km and walking non-stop would only take 215 days.

  • More than two out of three children are still driven to and from school each day, even though many live within 2 kilometres of their school - an easy 20 to 25 minute walk (much easier than walking around Australia).

Alternatively, your school can host a fun walking activity any time during Walk Week such as:

  • A class walkathon – held at lunchtimes where classes compete to see who can do the most laps of the oval.

  • Encourage the P&C/F to arrange an activity involving the whole school community such as a family bushwalk.

  • Organise a 'Magical Mystery Tour', by incorporating walking into a school excursion or outing.

  • Go orienteering! You will be involved in an energetic and interesting walk while developing navigational skills. You can contact Orienteering Western Australia  for more information.

By registering to participate in Walk Week 2009, your School will received a FREE event kit including posters and giveaways for the students who participate.
