Walk Week encourages Western Australians to be active within their community by walking for transport, health, recreation and the environment. Regular walking improves health and well being, helps reduce traffic congestion and pollution and is a great way to get to know your local community and increase vibrancy and put ‘eyes on the street’.
Walking is a low cost way to be active and it is easy to find opportunities every day to walk short trips – walk to public transport, work, school, or the local park and shop.
During Walk Week 2008, there were 43 community events being run across Perth.
Some great community event ideas:
- A community walk on a chosen route finishing with local entertainment
- A guided historic walk in your local community
- A walk to the park for a local community BBQ, breakfast or picnic
- A walk for people with special needs
- A nature awareness walk
- A pram walk for new mothers, fathers or grandparents
