Schools could reduce the number of short car trips by encouraging school children and their families to walk all or part of the way to school throughout the year.

Programs to get your students walking

The Department of Transport offers a range of initiatives to increase active transport to school. The Walking School Bus and TravelSmart to Schools are formal programs designed to encourage school children to walk to school more. Schools can also promote walking to the school community throughout the year.
