Statistics and monitoring

To gain an understanding of cycling patterns, the Department of Transport needs to monitor the usage of existing and new cycling infrastructure.

  Monitoring Perth's Bicycle Network (PBN)

The Perth Bicycle Network (PBN) monitoring project assesses the effectiveness of the PBN program through user surveys that have been conducted annually since 1998. The PBN usage monitoring survey involves measuring bicycle traffic (and some pedestrians) on select days at 72 locations throughout the Perth metropolitan area. Some counts are for three hours during peak time and some are over a 12 hour period. This data is then compared against survey data from previous years to determine usage trends on selected PBN routes.

Please see the reports for specific details.

The results from each annual survey are compiled into a report by an external contractor.

A quick summary

The chart below provides a quick summary of the Perth Bicycle Network monitoring results and the significant increase in cycling since 1998. These figures show a consistent upward trend.

  Traffic count data

The data collected from the fixed counters is downloaded, analysed and then uploaded to the web once every three months. The raw count data as well as a quarterly report will be available to download on this website as it becomes available.

Additional count sites have been added to the network since 1 August 2012. This new data is represented in two separate sections so as to not skew the data collected from the primary counters over previous years.

The raw count information is available below in Microsoft Excel spreadsheet format.
