Recreational routes

Perth and Kings Park by bike

A cycling guide to the central Perth area including the wonderful Kings Park and Botanic Garden that overlooks a spectacular riverside city skyline.

Ride around the rivers

A 50 km circuit (mainly via shared paths) that follows the picturesque Swan and Canning rivers. Wonderful views of Perth at many points along the way.

Ride from city to sea

A 12 km ride on shared paths from the Perth CBD to City Beach. This recreational route follows a series of reserves and parklands as it winds through the suburbs.

Ride along the Sunset Coast

A 55 km ride (mainly via shared paths) that follows the coast. Wonderful views of the Indian Ocean with many interesting sites and beaches to visit along the way. Joins up with the 'Ride around the rivers' route at Fremantle.

Burswood

Burswood Park Trail

A very scenic 3.5km route close to the Perth CBD that takes in Burswood Park and the Swan River foreshore.

Ride through the hills

Three separate rides of varying distances through the Darling Range hills situated on the outskirts of Perth. Highlights include forests, waterfalls, orchards and vineyards.

Ride from Armadale to Perth

A 50 km scenic riding route (via mainly shared paths) from the historic of town of Armadale, along the picturesque Canning River catchment, to Perth.



Perth to Fremantle bike route (pdf 1MB)

A 20 km bike route from Perth to the port city of Fremantle.

Perth to Midland bike route (pdf 1MB)

A 16 km bike route from Perth to the historic locality of Midland.

Albany to Perth route (pdf 165kb)

This 827 km route from Albany to Perth travels through unspoilt tall timber forests and dairy farming areas, past some of Australia's best wineries and along the spectacular coastline of the South West. It does include some busy roads, so careful planning and riding are recommended.

Exploring Rottnest Island by bicycle

This small holiday island lies 19 km off the coast of Fremantle and is ideal to explore by bicycle because private vehicles are not permitted on its roads.

Guide to Yellagonga Regional Park (pdf 1.7mb)

An easily accessible 1400 hectare park on the outskirts of the city at Joondalup that incorporates extensive wetlands and mature woodland. The park contains a range of excellent rides up to 12km in length.

 

Kalbarri cycle and walk trails (pdf 750kb)

The township of Kalbarri is situated 600km north of Perth and provides a gateway to the famous Kalbarri National Park. There are a number of cycle and walk trails in the Kalbarri area that offer spectacular views of the rugged coastline.

Exploring the Margaret River region by bicycle

This lush wine-growing region has a good network of paths, rail trails and quiet back roads enabling riders to visit all of the local attractions including caves, surf beaches, wineries, breweries, craft shops and art galleries. See this fact sheet (pdf 180) for more details.

Heritage trails

A number of local government authorities throughout Western Australia have developed walking and cycling routes that feature places of historical interest. Maps are provided for the following trails (for more details on a particular trail, contact the relevant local government authority).

Mountain bike routes

Boorara State Trail and Northcliffe Linkage Trail (pdf 1.8mb)

Carinyah Trail
A 15 km circuit ride located about 35 km south-east of Perth. Rated easy to moderate.

Denmark to Nornalup Rail Trail
47km ride that is currently divided into two sections. The first section of 33km is from Denmark River Mouth to Parker Road. The second is from Bow Bridge to Nornalup.

John Forrest Heritage Trail
A 10 km walk and cycle trail located about 26 km east of Perth.

Kep Track
A 75km walk and cycle trail located about 40 km east of Perth.

Lake Leschenaultia Trail
A 5 km walk and cycle trail located about 40 km north-east of Perth. Ideal for beginners.

Margaret River to Cowaramup Rail Trail
Trail starts several kilometres south of Margaret River and heads 18km north to the Cowaramup townsite. Combine it with a sealed path ride to Prevelly beach for a good overview of the region. You might find this fact sheet (pdf 180kb) useful.

Marrinup Trail (pdf 84kb)
An 8km trail that starts and finishes at the old Marrinup townsite, about from 10km north-west of Dwellingup,  it is suitable for novice and experienced riders. The track is marked by triangular silver-blue guides and it should be completed in a clockwise direction. There is a camping area with barbeques at Marrinup.

Mundaring Loop (currently closed until further notice by the Department of Environment and Conservation)
A 16 km loop ride located about 30 km east of Perth. Rated easy to moderate.

Munda Biddi Trail 
One of the world’s premier mountain bike routes. Currently travels 300 km, but will eventually stretch over 900 km through the lush South West corner of Western Australia.

It uses a network of bush tracks and old railway line formations with campsites every 35 to 40 km. Suitable for beginners to advanced. Can be done in small sections or as a whole ride over several days.

Northcliffe Forrest Park Trail and Federation Trail (pdf 1.8mb)

Old Timberline Trail
22km ride from Nannup townsite to Cambray Siding.

Railway Reserve Trail
A 40 km loop ride located about 30 km east of Perth. Rated moderate.

Ten Mile Brook Trail
7.5km ride from Margaret River townsite to Rusden picnic site.

Turner Hill Trail (pdf 100kb)
A 9km trail that starts and finishes near the junction of Higgins and Kesners Roads, it is accessed by heading north out of Dwellingup along Del Park Road, North Spur Road and Scarp Road. It is suitable for intermediate and experienced riders. The track is marked by triangular silver-blue guides and it should be completed in a clockwise direction.
