Woodside Energy sets bike benchmark

The home of one of the country’s largest oil and gas companies also boasts the highest number of bike parking spaces of any Perth workplace.

Opened in 2004, Woodside Plaza at 240 St. George’s Terrace currently accommodates 206 bike parking spaces with access card security, as well as 278 dedicated lockers and change rooms with six female and ten male showers. There is even a free sunscreen dispenser outside the change rooms.

In fact at present, there are more bike parking spaces than car parking spaces allocated underneath the building.

These state-of-the art end-of-trip facilities combined with the operation of an in-house Bicycle User Group (BUG) mean that Woodside Energy Ltd can actively promote cycling as a commuter option to its staff.

“Woodside links cycle commuting to its staff’s health and wellbeing, recognising that riding to and from work is a great way of ‘finding 30’,” said Communications Adviser Emily Tew.

“It seems to be really working because demand for bike parking is so great that we have begun looking at options to expand the facilities,” Emily said.

Testimonials

"Hi,

I have just moved to Perth from Sydney and would like to congratulate Bikewest for such fantastic maps. Back in Sydney, the NSW RTA maps are over 6 years old and do not include local government routes. It was trial and error getting around on my bike. The Department's maps over here helped me identify a great route to my city office for my first day on Monday. Thanks,"

“I would like to congratulate all those who contribute to the development of the Perth Bicycle Network and the government for their policy and financial commitment to the network.

Whilst I am a competitive cyclist, I am also one of the minority of commuters who chooses to ride to and from work each day, for health, environmental and financial reasons. I find the Perth Bicycle Network to be very useful from the perspective of training and commuting and I commend you on the development so far. The network is superior to other capital cities in Australia as well as those I have been to in North America.

I look forward to the continuing development and especially the finalisation of a cycleway from the city to the hills.

Well Done”

“I've recently started using the network of cycle paths around Perth (due to a change of address), and I'm very impressed. I use the bike lockers at West Leederville train station and I think they're a great idea. I also use the bike paths around the Swan between UWA and East Perth and along the Midland and Fremantle railway lines, and they're very easy to ride on. Congratulations, I think you're doing a great job to make this a bike-friendly city.
Cheers”

“ Many thanks for the cycle path extending towards Bassendean. It is a big help to be able to hop on the bicycle path around Maylands, to get quick access into the city, and I have noticed with pleasure that the extension to Bayswater is well under way, in a generous way enhanced by both overpass and tunnels. This is really well done, and makes me aware of how fortunate WA Cyclists are. In my hometown of Zurich there are many more cyclists, railway stations are surrounded by masses of locked up bicycles, yet there are hardly any bike paths. Well done, Bikewest!!!”
