Perth Bicycle Network Monitoring

The purpose of the PBN Monitoring project is to assess the effectiveness of the Perth Bicycle Network (PBN) program on cycle usage and to compare the study with previous monitoring surveys.  User surveys have been undertaken annually since 1998.

The Perth Bicycle Network Usage Monitoring Survey involves measuring bicycle traffic and some pedestrian traffic at 71 locations throughout the Perth metropolitan area. The data is primarily used as a comparison against the previous monitoring survey data, to continue to develop usage trends on selected PBN routes.

PBN Monitoring Quick Summary

The table and charts below show a quick summary of the PBN Monitoring results and the significant increase in people cycling since 1998.  These figures show a consistent upward trend.

PBN Monitoring Significant Projects

PBN Monitoring reports enable the Department of Transport and Bikewest to monitor the success of several new cycling facilities and the impact this infrastructure has on cycling patterns.

In 2003 the East Parade to Caledonian Avenue section of the Midland Line PSP opened.  The success of this facility is strongly reflected in PBN Monitoring reports and the table below.  An immediate and significant increase in cyclists was reported between 2002 and 2003 with a steady yearly increase to 323 cyclists in 2008.  This also represents a migrational shift with many cyclists choosing the new facility as their preferred route.
