New Guideline Rates are now available on our website to help owner-drivers negotiate a safe and sustainable freight rate.

Based on standard tray-top trucks, the rates are calculated in per kilometre and per hour dollar amounts, cover 13 different truck combinations operating in metropolitan and regional environments, and reflect the latest data on typical operating costs.

Owner-drivers can use the guideline rate that most closely aligns to their vehicle type to help calculate a suitable rate for a particular freight task. Using the Guideline Rates together with the cost calculator tool that is also available on our website, will help owner-drivers to have a better understanding of their business costs and work out a rate that is safe and sustainable.

The Guideline Rates aren’t just important for owner-drivers – a hirer must provide the Guideline Rates and the Information Form to an owner-driver before agreeing to an owner-driver contract, unless the owner-driver says they already have both documents.

Information used to calculate the Guideline Rates includes fuel consumption data released by the Australian Trucking Association and the latest fuel data from the FuelWatch website. Additional fuel stops chosen by the Road Freight Transport Industry Council (RFTIC) are also used to calculate average fuel costs.

Head to the owner-drivers page for more information and to sign up to receive owner-driver emails, including future Guideline Rate updates delivered straight to your inbox.
