She connected with the Ashburton Aboriginal Corporation’s Learn 2 Drive Program, funded by the Driving Access and Equity Program, which provided the support she needed to begin her journey back to driving.
Fourteen years after her licence was suspended, Rowena successfully applied to the district court to have the restriction lifted, clearing the way for a fresh start.
Although she started out nervous and found it difficult to stay focused, Rowena’s determination never wavered. Despite ongoing health challenges, she committed to her driving lessons to overcome fear, strengthen her understanding of road rules and prepare for the practical driving assessment (PDA).
Initially failing the hazard perception test, with persistence and extra practise, she passed just in time for her PDA.
“Getting back to driving without fear and regaining my licence would be one of the best experiences of my life,” Rowena said.
