Improved facilities for penholders at Fremantle

A new dedicated facility for penholders at Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour adds significant appeal as an attractive place to pen your vessel.

As harbour manager, the Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure (DTMI) recently completed the substantial new building on Capo D’Orlando Drive conveniently located at the main access point for the harbour’s boat pens.

Penholders have access to bathrooms, kitchen and laundry facilities, a dedicated covered BBQ area and accessible toilets – with two also available for public use.

The $2.9 million project also included the creation of storage spaces and an area for trolleys and bins, new fencing and CCTV improvements to boost safety.

The completion of the new facility follows an earlier $6.1 million project to extend services at the southern land backed wharf and work to reclaim land for the penholder building. The project also delivered improved connections to the southern part of the harbour with a new pedestrian path, lighting upgrades and landscaping to improve public access and increase safety. In 2023 Jetty 3 was also replaced at a cost of $4.6 million.

Completion of the penholder facility comes as DTMI continues a major upgrade to the harbour’s electrical network to meet future demands.

Providing easy access to Rottnest Island, Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is regarded as a highly desirable place to pen a vessel in the metropolitan area.
