Record-breaking year for active travel at Your Move schools

Last year, schools participating in our Your Move Schools program showed significant increases in active travel.

Capturing insights from over 28,000 students through our start and end of year Hands Up surveys, 2024 proved to be one of our best years yet for students and their families walking, wheeling and riding for the school journey.

Key highlights:

  • During the 2024 school year, active travel increased by 9% - our largest impact since 2016!
  • Primary schools led the charge with a 12% boost in walking, riding and scooting.
  • Car use at primary schools dropped by 6% – a win for traffic reduction and cleaner air.
  • Perth metro schools recorded a 10% increase, while regional schools saw a solid 4% rise.

Department of Transport and Major Infrastructure Behaviour Change Manager Helen Ginbey said this is a great achievement.

“It’s incredible to see these results and it really validates the work that we do in helping schools to find healthier, fun and more sustainable ways to travel.

“We’re so proud of the efforts of our Your Move schools and commend them for their ongoing commitment to improving active travel rates.

“Creating a culture in school communities of walking, riding a bike or scooter to school has benefits for everyone.

“Students arrive to school energised and ready to learn; active travel also eases congestion, parking pressures and pollution around the school gate, so it’s a win-win for everyone.”
