Barry obtained his learner’s permit 28 years ago but struggled to receive the necessary support to navigate the licensing system until he signed up to Community Living Association’s Drive Forward Program in Albany.

Barry's sister, Kathie, discovered a flyer about the Drive Forward Program, funded by the Driving Access and Equity Program (DAEP), and encouraged Barry to sign up in March 2025.

He was paired with a dedicated driving instructor and began his lessons in April. As an enthusiastic cyclist in Albany, Barry already possessed a solid grasp of road rules and traffic safety. Combined with his newfound skills and confidence, he was ready to take his driving test just four months later.

Barry and his family believe the program has unlocked a world of possibilities for individuals with disabilities in Albany.

“Myself and mum would like to personally thank the Drive Forward Coach and the program” shared Kathie, Barry’s sister. “The program has enabled Barry to achieve something he never though he could. For Barry, its huge and will open up his world to travel, camping and more job opportunities.”

When asked about his plans now that he has his licence, Barry responded, “I’m getting a Ford and going camping!”
