The end of the Austroads Experienced Driver Recognition (EDR) category could change the way you transfer your overseas car or motorcycle licence to a Western Australian (WA) driver’s licence.
There are 16 countries, regions and jurisdictions recognised under this category:
- Bulgaria
- Czech Republic
- Estonia
- Hong Kong (Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China)
- Hungary
- Latvia
- Lithuania
- Poland
- Republic of Cyprus
- Republic of Korea (South Korea)
- Republic of Serbia
- Romania
- Slovakia
- Slovenia
- South Africa
- Taiwan
On 30 April 2025, Austroads ended the EDR category.
Under EDR, people from certain countries or regions could use their driving experience and age to meet WA licensing requirements instead of needing to pass a theory test and Practical Driving Assessment (PDA).
WA residents were provided a further six months for transition. This period will end on 31 October 2025.
From 1 November 2025, WA residents from countries or regions previously recognised in the EDR category will need to pass a theory test and a PDA to obtain a WA driver’s licence.
