Double the achievement twice as nice

Twins Shinia and Danica had several challenges when it came to getting their licences, including financial barriers, limited access to supervisors, and juggling school and work.

Thanks to WA PCYC Kalgoorlie’s Drive to the Future (DTTF) program, funded by the Driving Access and Equity Program, they’ve turned these obstacles into achievements.

Danica’s Journey

Referred by a Department of Education Participation Officer, Danica is a full-time student and part-time chemist employee with dreams of owning her own beauty salon. Her biggest hurdle? Affording lessons.

DTTF provided free lessons, mentoring, and financial support, and her mentor helped create a flexible schedule around study and work.

“I want to be able to drive and not have to ask my mum to take me places, to increase my freedom,” she said.

After passing her hazard perception test, she shared her thoughts on her experience.

“I now have the ability to drive confidently with a supervisor driver through this program and my Mum. I did the Keys for Life 10-week program, this was key to me succeeding.”

Shinia’s Journey

Inspired by her sister’s success, Shinia also joined Drive to the Future to overcome financial challenges and limited family support for lessons.

“More experience with a qualified driving instructor, my mum is unable to provide lessons with me and my sister, and it’s free,” she explains.

A dedicated student, Shinia’s goal is to get her P Plates and pursue her dream of becoming an accountant. She has some sensible advice for others learning to drive.

“Be mindful when driving, watch what others are doing, and practice the theory test.”
