Licence helps with apprenticeship

Amos, an apprentice carpenter, recently took important steps towards getting his driver’s licence by joining Blackwood Youth Action’s (BYA) Driving Positive Change program, funded by the Driving Access and Equity Program.

“Having a licence will be beneficial for my job, as it will allow me to drive to different locations without always depending on others for a lift,” Amos said.

Amos is required to attend weekly TAFE classes for his apprenticeship but with the campus over an hour away and limited bus availability, he’s currently on a waiting list for transport.

“It is important for me to have my driver’s licence so that I can attend TAFE as part of my apprenticeship,” Amos said.

Kath from BYA said that for many young people, family support is crucial in ensuring they can get to employment and/or training.

“Without this support, finding and keeping a job can be extremely difficult,” she said.

One highlight for Amos has been learning to drive a large manual car.

“I’ve really enjoyed driving the manual, it’s something I wouldn’t have been able to do otherwise since my family doesn’t have one,” he said.

Determined to succeed, Amos practises regularly and continues to build his confidence behind the wheel.

“I’m working hard to get ready for my practical driving assessment so I can get my licence and keep moving forward in my apprenticeship,” he said.
