STEP 6 Book and pass a Practical Driving Assessment (PDA)

The Practical Driving Assessment (PDA) is the driving test that satisfies us that you can ride safely and are ready to ride without supervision on your provisional licence.

To take your PDA for your motorcycle licence you must:

be at least 17 years old
have had your learner's permit for at least 6 months
have recorded at least 50 hours of supervised driving in your DTMI issued learner log book or Learn&Log, including 5 hours of night time driving (unless you hold C class licence or higher).
passed the motorcycle hazard perception test
feel confident that you can ride safely without a supervisor driver.

Book your PDA

You can book a PDA up to 6 months in advance. You must be at least 16 and half years old to book a PDA.

You can book your PDA:

online via DoTDirect for all metropolitan DTMI service centres and most regional agency sites. You will need to create a DoTDirect account to book online.
in person at a regional DTMI service centre or agent. In person bookings cannot be made at metropolitan DTMI service centres.

Book your PDA online

If you don’t feel ready to take your PDA, you can cancel or reschedule as many times as you like. This can be done 24 hours a day via DoTDirect or by calling 13 11 56 between 7:00 am and 5:30 pm, Monday to Friday (excluding public holidays). Remember, you need to give at least 48 hours’ notice otherwise you will be charged for a new PDA. This includes weekends and public holidays where DoTDirect can be used.

On the day

To be eligible to take your PDA you must:

arrive at least 15 minutes before your booked appointment.
bring your completed DTMI issued Learner Log Book, ensuring it has been signed by you and your supervising driver (not required if you hold C class licence or higher).
bring your learner’s permit.
bring your completed DTMI issued paper log book, ensuring it has been signed by you and your supervising driver (not required if you hold C class licence or higher). Otherwise, if using only Learn&Log to record all 50 hours of supervised driving, submit your electronic declaration of completion from within Learn&Log*.
provide a licenced and roadworthy vehicle in the correct class.
wear approved safety gear - helmet, enclosed footwear, long pants (tracksuit pants are not acceptable) and a long sleeved shirt or jacket. Gloves and eye protection are also recommended.

If you pass your PDA

You will be issued with a provisional licence.

If you do not pass

You will need to book another and pay a resit fee for each PDA.

*If you have recorded trips in both the paper log book and Learn&Log, you will be unable to submit an electronic Declaration of Completion. When you present for your PDA you will be required to sign a Declaration of Electronic Log Book Completion (E109) form. In this case, staff will manually check DTMI systems to ensure you have completed the required hours of supervised driving in Learn&Log.

Practical driving assessment fee

The cost of your first PDA is included in your learner’s permit application fee.
