Logging the drive to freedom

Tavesha was one of the first young people to sign up for WA PCYC in Collie new Drive to the Future program, funded by the Driving Access and Equity Program, and in just three months, she’s made incredible progress.

Although, for Tavesha, the road to getting her licence hasn’t been easy.

“I have a long history of depression and anxiety, and I’ve had a genuine fear of getting in the car to drive. I found the entire experience extremely overwhelming,” she shared.

Despite these challenges, Tavesha knew why she wanted her licence.

“Having my licence will help me gain independence and provide better opportunities for me to get a better job and create a great life for myself. I want to be able to get around freely and live the life I’ve always wanted.”

With the support of her PCYC mentor, Tavesha developed a routine that worked for her and her anxiety, including consistent afternoon lessons, texting as the main communication method, and learning at a pace she was comfortable with. These strategies helped her overcome fears and build confidence behind the wheel.

Tavesha has now completed over 30 supervised hours and is thrilled to be halfway toward her goal.

“I feel like for a long time, getting my licence was never going to be achievable. I desperately wanted it, but so many things were in my way. I cannot believe I now have 30 hours down!” she said.

Tavesha has some advice for others considering starting their licensing journey.

“It’s not as bad as it seems at the start, just give it a go and you never know.”

PCYC staff are proud to be part of Tavesha’s progress and share in her growing confidence in driving and in social settings.
